Without throwing in the same old overplayed Willie Nelson lyric (no offense Willie) The Humms are back on the road and blazing a five mile wide fiery path of rock and roll vengeance leaving nothing behind but the remnants of a party’s past and a resurrected need for their high energy, timeless, we don’t give a shit, rock and roll. This past week I rode along with the band for a three day tour in North Carolina. The Humms crash-landed and busted through the music scenes of Chapel Hill, Greensboro, Durham, and the radio waves of Duke University’s WXDU (fm 88.7). I was able to see not only the performances of The Humms, but I was also able to experience many other remarkable bands through out the extended weekend. Those bands included: Pinche Gringo, also a band with a raw and refreshing throw-back to Tom Waits (sorry for not catching their name), as well as a band reminiscent of Velvet Revolver (sorry again about the missing name), Spider Bags, and NoBunny.

Our first stop in North Carolina was the Cave. The Cave, locally known as the oldest bar in Chapel Hill, is an underground, basement style bar smack dab in the middle of down town. The flow of drinks and good times were equally matched by the outpouring of good old foot stomping, heart felt, slap a stranger, underground rock. The mix of Pinche Gringo’s garage like grit and blues-like lyrics brings a retro nostalgic punch to the gut to any listener including myself. Along side Pinche, The Humms brought their trio of Zeke, Jackie, and Jess to rip through my perceived thoughts of “so called music” in order to kick, stomp, and torture my mind into reinventing it’s auditory abilities. From the foot stomping, leg slapping sounds of Jupiter to the moral doubting abrasive lyrics of Jesus lied, this set kept my body in constant motion and my brain craving more.

Our second night was spent at Seven Day Weekend in Greensboro with two other bands, one that was able to lyrically and musically move my mind in the same way in which Tom Waits did, and still does. The other band that was suggestive of Velvet Revolver deserves recognition in my eyes. One week before playing the Seven Day Weekend show they lost their lead guitarist and still went on with the show.

Our third night was heaving with amazing music, first-class people, and outstanding food at the Layabout in Durham. I was able to watch The Humms play alongside Spiderbags, Pinche Gringo, NoBunny, and many more. Needless to say, this whole weekend was to-the-brim overflowing with continuous great bands, amazing music, awesome hospitality, unforgettable times, and new found friends.

-Special thanks go out to Ashley, Hank, Jason, Liz, Rob, Allyson, Craig, Serra Ferguson, and Pinche Gringo. We couldn’t have done it without you guys and your hospitality!

HELP OUR FRIENDS RELEASE THEIR RECORD

During the middle of the Lemonland recording sessions, I had my friends, These Magnificent Tapeworms come down from Illinois to Gypsy Farm to record their second record. Here we are some 5 months and two sessions later and the record is 90% done. They need help releasing it. Let me take a moment to tell you about these guys.

I call their sound "Desert Music" that can easily be compared to Link Wray and The Cramps but this is no copy cat band by any means. Just two Ex-Pizza boys and their drummer Joe, who I've never seen in anything but a dress, doing what they love the most. They are touring all the way down to Florida, which starts tonight in Jacksonville to stir up some buzz for the new record. You can help them release it (and get some really cool stuff at the same time) by donating to their Kickstarter page here. Thanks fellas.

Last but not least, the bands. The night began with a set from Timmy Tumble and I can honesly say that "tumble" rings true in his extreamly physical and entertaining show. Next up were The Trashcans, Nates band...and quickly becoming one of my favoirte garage bands. They'll be up at Gypsy Farm in June to record material for their debut..very excited.

After The Cans came Pinche Gringo, a NC based one-man band, all though he had two friends joining him during his set which left everone's ears dripping wet and wanting more. We closed the musical night out with select numbers from our upcoming Lemonland record and there was also some nudity involved, which is never a bad thing. Will be posting footage from that soon, so keep an eye.

We all can not wait for the next blow out at the Spillege and if you were there then you know why. These past few months have felt like one long night so it was good to see the sun. Along with seeing daylight today, I finished up on some small sound overdubbs and began mixing. Let me say I am the most excited with this record than I have been with anything else in my life. Everything from swells of vocals to "ghoul howling" to using a Sonar as a Snare drum. Along with the original formula you know as "The Humms", there will also be a few mellow numbers as well, but don't be so quick to turn the track, this record has over 100 surprises and counting..

Recording Update 1

Been recording since November. Be ready for a post about that trip with plenty of interesting pics..well i dont know about pics because my camera shitted out on me a few weeks ago...never buy a sony camera. In other news i've been planning to write a blog about how bands with pictures of them walking down rail road tracks piss me off. But that's to come at a later date.

tomorrow..well today..we are playing in Athens at Tasty World with my old friends' "The Zou" (www.myspace.com/thezou) check them out, they have a lot of great songs, one of my personal favorites at the moment is "When the Ink Dries" one cool thing about these guys is their music is unprodictable...meaning their shit isn't just "opening..verse...verse..chorus..verse..chorus..bridge..verse..outro" and they sorta have their own sound. Anyways it's late. I'll make it a point to get either me or bleech to keep this blog more up to date. Be safe out there in the world.

- Zeke

Alabama & Atlanta

Sorry for the absence of keeping this contraption up to date but between being busy with recording and playing...my lap top has been dead for a couple of weeks..but no thanks to the fabulous people at Dell, it is up and running. I've got a little catching up to do, so let's get right to it with our trip down to Alabama on December 19th:

Steven: Hard at work with The Humms Mobile CD Burning Device

First off, let me just speak for everyone in the band by saying.."Thank You Alabama" for showing us the warmest welcome we've ever known since we made the choice to join the liege of infamous sinners known as "musicians". We arrived in Sheffield, AL some 6 hours after we left Hartwell (counting all back tracking...rest stops....Bleech forgetting his cloths and getting lost in the hood) to a building filled with a mixed assortment of people wearing everything from black trench coats to G-strings. Kurt, the lead singer of Satan's Youth Minsters greeted us as we pulled in and I think his appearance frightened Steven (the roadie) and Bleech just a little bit.

Bleech and Kurt

Once we got inside, we were informed that the show had sold out! Great news for a little horror rock band 6 hours from home...that usually never happens. We got to catch the majority of The Skeleton Family's set which consisted of cross dressing..floor pumping rhythms and twangy guitars. Soon after the Skeleton's had finished we loaded our gear on to the "stage" which was a spaced-out spot on the floor while the crowd of true rockers, skaters and black lip stick watched and waited. The show could not have went any better. They loved it and we loved them. When Tyler pulled out his 10" rubber Dildo to play slap bass, it felt right at home in the smokey tavern. One thing I noticed through out the entire set, was this middle-age gentleman in a wheel cheer down in front rockin' and noddin' to every song. He was by far one of the coolest peeps I've ever played in front of.

After our set, we tore down and chunked our gear to the side to make way for Satan's Youth Ministers. While Steven and Tyler gathered everything into a neat pile, I stepped outside to grab a smoke. On my way out I shook many a' hand of pleased Alabamians and a few from Kentucky....small world. After having an intelligent conversation with a man outside named "James" about squatting in national forests' I made my way back inside after hearing a loud "thump" and screams...that was the mating call for all SYM fans apparently. Making my way up to the front in-between the warm bodies of the crowd, I could make out 2 Pentagram strobe signs on both sides of the area, 4 guys decked out in fashion that would make Sgt. Pepper proud and then Kurt....screaming about Satan and Xanex Love...and The Silver Fox. It was amazing.

Satan's Youth Ministers

After the show was over, we all gathered around outside to discuss where to go from there. After loading up and a quick smoke..Kurt jumped in our SUV to give us directions to their place for the night. On the way there he mentioned something about a little after party. You know how I like after parties. As we pulled down this little neighborhood road, we began to see cars lined up on each side of the road and could hear the low beat of a stereo in the distance. We had arrived at "The Church of The Psychedelic Goat" as Kurt dubbed it. Just walking up to the house gave me the feeling of being in a grainy, low budget 70's horror flick...and I loved it. Opening the door, I saw black lights...Christmas bulbs...and random 45's and LPs scattered through out the rooms...I was home. As I mingled with the other band mates and gals from the show, I began to notice what could have been at least 50 pictures of Jesus hanging all around the house. Later on when Steven asked Kurt about that he just said "I went to a Christian School and I like to Torture myself" while he let out an evil laugh that brought smiles to our faces as we sat around his kitchen table and played with paper-plaster body parts we had found.

It seemed as quickly as we got there, we were waking up the next afternoon on a hardwood floor. I rolled over to see Bleech to the right of me sleeping with a Starship toy and Tyler to the left of me covered in many assortments of blankets. Justin, the guitar player for SYM came through the living room and offered to show us the best Mexican restaurant in town which we gladly agreed too. After stuffing ourselves we said our goodbyes and thank yous for the great time and was on our way.

Myself with Taco in pocket...to go.

We were now headed for Atlanta to play a house party at a Mormon House. Funny right? Only the Humms would play with Satan's Youth Ministers one night and then with the Mormons the next night. But these weren't the "finger-casting" type. They were really cool and love good rock music. We got to the house around 7:30pm and began unloading. The first band was a duo featuring acoustic guitar, banjo and a Hi-Hat. Reminded me a lot of the Avett Brothers. After them came "At The End of All Things"....some very close friends of mine that I had met back when I played with Fact Not Fiction. I also produced their only CD that was released right before they broke up due to different members moving away. It was around Christmas time so they were all back in town for family gatherings and obviously a show. They churned out about 6 or 7 songs that brought back a lot of good and bad memories for me but nonetheless, was great.

After their set, Nate (The bass player) took about 20 minutes to perform under his solo name "Science + Skeleton" which he asked me to play drums for earlier right as I had literally stepped out of the car. "It's just noise man..you don't need to know any of the songs..just make noise" he said. So that we did and I must say, it was a lot of fun..something very different. Once our "Noise Jam" was over with, we plugged in and did what we do. Obviously, playing inside a small house with a small sound system, we couldn't really move around that much or be as loud as usual, so in a way it wasn't really a fun show for me, musically..but just being there around cool people and seeing them dance to our music was one of the best things ever.

Right as we were going to play our last song "Gun", My Banjitar quit working which caused Bleech and Tyler to loose their place in the arrangement and having no monitors, that can easily happen. As Tyler scrambled to play the verse line, I was totally in another spot and after a few seconds, my quick temper got the best of me and with out even realizing where I was I screamed "FUCK" in the mic and ordered them to stop playing. There was silence within whole house. It was if someone had jerked the needle off a record player. I stared at Tyler with a look of anger while thinking about tackling him...but I soon discarded that idea due to the fact that there was several breakable objects behind him....plus these things happen all the time between us and they are over with as quickly as they happen. After the quick obscenity, we finished the song and said our thank yous and started to un-plug. Right as I was turning my amp off, this older man sitting on the steps in the back yelled "Play a Beatles Song!". I looked up at him and gave him a big smile as we began to play the opening to "I'll Cry Instead". That was the first time I had ever seen a man of that age move like that...with his hands up in the air..and needless to say, it got me "fired up" and was a great ending to the set. By the way, If you are the guy and you are reading this, I think I left my amp cable at that house...if you could Fed-Ex it back to me..that would be splendid...thanks.

After the house party we debated on getting a cheap hotel room for the night but after it had rolled past 3am and we had no "click" with us, I decided to make a mad dash back home. I would like to thank to Owen's for letting us shake the pictures on their walls and offering us unlimited amounts of Truffle...(The English Eggnog).

So there we were coming up through downtown Atlanta at around 4am headed back to my house in North-East GA. Somewhere between 4:30 and 5:30 Bleech said he woak up to me blowing to the car horn in timing with the radio...apparently that's a good remedy for staying awake at the wheel. As I parked the SUV, we left Steven asleep in the back...he looked comfortable. When I finally stepped into my bed room, I hit the mattress like it was the end of times.

You'd think that would be the end of this story....but there's one more thing I need to mention.

I woak up around 1pm to Tyler watching TV and Bleech "eye ballin" something...as he always does. Tyler mentioned the fact that he had his suspicions that a Cow had been running around in the back yard. With a very puzzled look on my face, I stepped out on the back deck and discovered several hoff prints in the grass and nice big pie the beast had left for me. We began to follow the tracks all the way around the house to the front yard and they lead right to the door on the SUV that Steven would have used to get out. Looking down on the ground below the door, we saw signs of a scuffle and it appeared as if Steven had been awaken by the Beast and had a quick battle with it before retreating to his Honda and making an escape. We continued to follow the hoff prints and discovered that our four legged friend had knocked over my mail-box. After setting it back up...(good as new)...I went back inside and slept for a few more ours. What a way to start off your day.

My Mail-Box after I fixed it

Zeke

The Humms Do Halloween

2 FREE DOWNLOADS

Recording on Lake Hartwell

Over the weekend we moved my entire studio and all of our gear into Tyler's lake house. His parents had gone out of town for 5 days so we jumped at the opportunity to record in some good ol' air conditioning...not to mention the fact of being in a different environment all together. During our time at the house I had limited access to the internet (and I mean, who would want to be writing a blog when you're jamming out in a lake house right?) So, I'm going to list day by day what when on in the house to the best of my knowledge. We did take photos as well as videos to go with our spare of the moment idea to make a horror film/documentary about ourselves..(Believe it or not, you can STILL get some what bored at a lake house after a while). Below is the teaser trailer to the film that we are now calling "Planets vs Crocodiles"

Now then, here's what went down....

Day One - Thursday

My original plans were to be awake around 10am and be all loaded up and at Tyler's house by Noon. Well, I've been on a really fucked up sleep schedule lately and on top of that, my super expensive alarm clock ($2) failed to go off. So after waking up at 2:30pm, I got everything I could together really quickly and jumped in the shower. Tyler was already calling asking where I was. I had a few more things to take care of around the house as well as packing before I could leave. I arrived at the lake house around 6 that evening and we then unloaded the cargo and distributed it through out the house..(Thanks for doing 90% of the unloading Kyle!). We turned the living room into the live room with our mass amounts of musical junk...the computer room / office became the control room, the living room, because the live room and the guest bed room became my room (that i slept in for only 1 night).

We spend the rest of the evening plugging cables up, getting a feel for the room and enjoying some of the 57 roast beef sandwiches that Tyler slung up. I remember sleeping on the floor that night (beside a pallet of pillows) with Fresh Prince of Bel-Air in the background.

Day Two - Friday

Woke up around 2:30pm again..Tyler was still in School so I sat around the house, got some more things in order and grabbed a shower. Soon after, Tyler was home and had brought over our good friend Stephen who was there for moral support and verbal solutions. Around 5pm, Bleech arrived at the house and sat up his drums so we could have a quick practice of a few songs, because we were STILL trying to feel out the room and the sounds it made. A few things vibrated but nothing really bad. We spent the rest of the evening free styling and jamming around on ideas...oh and Bleech really loved the Roast Beef Sandwiches as well....we discovered that when a little spicy mustard was added, they really came to life.

So lunch was over and I sat down and recorded the guitar tracks to "Sex Sex Sex" and Tyler attempted to do his bass lines but the session ended soon due to us all feeling shitty for some unknown reason. After jamming, we took the boat out on the lake to cool off and relax. I remember I was the only one awake on the boat after about half an hour...apparently I had serenaded them all to a slumber with my guitar pickin' skills. Once I woke everyone up, we returned to the house where Bleech and I were the only ones to stay up till dawn, filming for our documentary and doing other random shit. This was the only night I slept in the guest bed.

Day 3 - Saturday

I awoke 3 times this day. Once to an amplifier in my face blasting the Techno hit: "Screwing You on the Beach at Night" by the Bloodhound Gang, the second time to Tyler using one of Bleech's cymbals as a gong and lastly when they pored ice water down my crotch. I realized it was 5pm... "Christ!" I thought to myself. After grabbing a quick shower, I stepped out on the deck to have a smoke, where Tyler was getting ready to go into work for a few hours. After he left, I set up some mics around the kit and let Bleech knock out the drums to "Sex Sex Sex" along with my guitar tracks that had been done the night before. After he had completed those, I began work on the guitar parts for "Jupiter" which when through in one take..I was very pleased. Right after the recording had stopped, Tyler walked in with some "to-go" food from the restaurant where he works. It was very good, and Bleech's Chicken sandwhich was very good as well. (I dont think you noticed Bleech but when your back was turned, i took a bite out of your sandwhich, i'll owe ya one). After choking down the meal, Bleech knocked out his tracks as well as Tyler Finishing up his bass lines to both songs. Afterwords, we had another boat ride out on Lake Hartwell around 2am where we had very random conversations including topics such as "Black Comedy". After getting back to the house, we all laid down on the living room floor and watched "Fight Club" until 7am and which by then after seeing the movie, wanted to throw myself off a building. Not because the movie was bad, it was really great actually...but because it had left a very odd taste in my brain. I found comfort on a couch surrounded by other furniture and various wicker chairs in what had became "The Storage...Sun Room".

Bleech was also the Coffee man of the night as well as Tyler making his fine Iced Mocha Drinks.

Day 4 - Sunday

I wake up around 2:30pm once again to Tyler explaining to me how he had looked all over the house for me and had just found me hidden in the mountain of wicker. Bleech was gone and so were his drums. He had said something the night before about him and his special someone having a dinner date that evening, so i guess he had to head out early to make it home in time. Tyler and I once AGAIN took the boat out after listening/mixing the tracks from the last two nights...and this time the Sun was out and glaring down on us, so we cut this trip short. Once home again, I started breaking down gear and getting it ready to be packed away while Tyler took a nap in his room for about 45 minutes. When the gear was all squared away, we moved a couch into the living room and watched a "Myth-Busters Marathon" where they proved that it was impossible in all cases to walk on water, much to mine and Tyler's debate. The door bell rang and it was the Pizza guy with one of those new Grilled pizzas which i highly recommend. After all of that, we did what neither of us wanted to do....load the trailer. It did however, go a lot faster than I had expected. After briefly packing my cloths and random socks (I'm not sure if they are mine?) I found my keys and made the 20 drive home. What a relief to be back in my own home again...even though it was only 4 days. I had a smoke, got into my favorite sleep pants and didn't leave the couch until 6am when i passed out. It was some good sleep.

And that was the probably not so interesting story of The Humms recording at Lake Hartwell...or "Hummwell" as a few of us have deemed it. Now with all my gear back at the Farmhouse, I'll be mixing and overdubbing for the next few nights to come. Stay tuned!

- Zeke

Lion Drawing

Tell us what this video does for you. Last night Bleech and I headed into the studio to get some things worked out. Maybe that's a sign that it's time to clean up the studio floor once again. I would have snapped a picture for you all to see, but I was too busy wrapping a towel around my foot to stop the bleeding. Who says studio work isn't dangerous?

Later on after my foot had drained out, we began work on "Strawberry Glue" The guitars/bass tracks had been done about a week or so ago and Bleech was throwin' down his tracks. It took him at least 35 takes to get this right...not because he's not a good drummer..it was mainly due to the fact that it was hard to get a good headphone mix where the click track could be heard clearly. Simple problem. After we fixed that, he nailed it with in the next couple of takes. Next up was "Pretty Green Leaves". We got some what experimental with the drum beat on this one, breaking it down into a complex, thought out......"thing"....and I'm sure he started to get a little mad when I would stop the recording because he missed an accent or crash. But hey, you want to be at your best right?

After laying down the root beat, he overdubbed his sweet new tambourine (ha) and then an auxiliary beat in the back ground. This was actually really fun to record. I got an old Radio Shack Microphone that I've had since i was 10 or 11 (?) set up in the middle of the live room...about 10 feet in front of the Kit...that then was ran into an MXR guitar distortion pedal and then ran (via 1/4" cable) into the console. The result was a lo-fi, dirty old skool type of sound. Very Pleased.

I'm really excited to see what song we churn out next. Be on the look out for these mixes to be on the Myspace sometime maybe before the fall. Stay in touch.

- Zeke

Studio Sessions 2

So tonight we went back to the studio to begin work on "Pretty Green Leaves" We got the Electric Piano, Guitar, Bass and scratch vocal down, although it was quite a task fighting off our new found company in the studio. We've recently discovered that parts of our studio has been infested with Ants. I hate those bastards. One came up out of a key as i was playing the Piano part and nearly cost the take. I recovered quick though...using my pinky to squash him as i played on.

Bleech should be back home from the beach today as well, although he wont be coming to the studio until this Thursday to do his drum tracks. I'm really stoked to piece all these tracks together and see what happens. Until then, i shall return to the studio to get rid of our little friends. This isn't over...

Oh yeah, we started recording last nite..

Here you see our producer, Yoshemee chilling beside my guitar rig in the studio.

Yes, that's a real Xylophone

TV-head Mahican #2 standing guard over the console.

Some of My (and Tylers) toys on the floor

Sorry for not posting this last night...but...Tyler and I went out to the studio last evening to begin work on our "release"...whatever that means. Bleech was absent for this session because he is away at the beach. Bleech is at the Beach...cool deal.

We started on "Strawberry Glue", a tune you may remember from our myspace page. One thing i can say about the recording so far, is it's nothing like the demo, but just like the demo. If that makes sense. Then later on (tonight), I couldn't sleep so i put on a coat and returned to the studio to overdub my guitar parts (didn't like the sound of the first ones.) For this, I pulled out my Epiphone Dot guitar (modeled after a 335), definitely not the "Crin-da-la-crim" of guitars, but i like it and it got the job done. First time i had recorded that guitar in over a Year.

I can't wait for all of you to hear what we've been creating...even just last night. The beginning to "Strawberry Glue" almost brought tears, and most likely will before we are done with it...not because I'm some terrific writer..far from it. I just know the story behind this song and it really hits home..and I'm hoping it does the same for you, whatever you story may be. Above are some pics from the recording session tonight.

Questions about our name.

If you've ever wondered how we got our name or what it means, just check this video out.
